You’ve heard me say it several times in the past… I LOVE my clients. I feel like I have such a connection with them. We seem to have several things in common and are able to chat about anything. I really enjoy our conversations – especially at newborn sessions since they are low key and usually a bit longer than a family session. I say “usually” because the family I am featuring today practically had to pull out a cot for me to nap on back in 2008 – I was at their home for 6 hours photographing their first baby. Yes, you read that right… 6 hours. The funny thing was none of us really noticed how long it was taking for the little princess to fall asleep because we were just chatting and listening to music – turns out the dad is a master at putting together playlists. I swore he was using my iTunes library to make them because it was unreal how many songs they were playing that were personal favorites of mine. I was so thrilled! Between the music, their lovely home, and the view of the Golden Gate Bridge, the long wait was barely noticeable.
The next time I saw this lovely family was last spring for her 1 year pictures. I couldn’t believe how grown up she was! Where did that little newborn go? And what would she be like the next time I saw her? Well I got the answer to the last question a couple of months ago when I got a call from her mama telling me baby number two was on the way – I was SO excited! The kind of excited you get when you hear your friends are having a baby. As soon as the little peanut arrived, I cleared my calendar and headed into San Francisco on a very rainy morning.
Despite the rain, their home had some amazing soft light – you would have no idea it was pouring outside by looking at the pictures. And baby brother was such a great sleeper. As I mentioned, his big sister sorta gave me a run for my money when she was a newborn, but this little bug slept like a champ – even with big sister padding about and “loving” on him. Having an older sister or brother can be tricky when taking newborn photos, but if you are able to roll with what the oldest wants to do, you can get some great connections and reactions. I just let her do her thing and she gave me so many opportunities for the great pictures you see below! One minute she would cuddle with him, and then she was off to play with her daddy or dolls. If I had tried to control the situation more, she wouldn’t have given us the fabulousness that she did. :)
I have spent so much time with this family, that I feel like I’ve known them for AGES. They are so kind and sincere. I feel so fortunate to have them as clients.

They have this stunning blue couch, so I tried to emphasize any other blue that I could – blankets, jeans, background vases, etc… No need to bring a bunch of props with you, just look around and use what you’ve got.

This last picture, of the little girl holding her dad’s finger, melts me… she kept coming over and taking his hand so he would follow her to play with her.
*sigh*
We are nearing the end of January (wait… what? How did that happen?) and I hope 2011 has been good to you so far!

So very sweet.

julie - THis is one of my fav newborn sessions ever! You nailed it. It sure helps when you feel that closeness and connection to a family doesn’t it? I love how real these are, how happy everyone looks, and just the overall “greatness” going on here. I’m so glad you shared these :)
Jennifer Chaney - Thank you all so much! One of my top three favorite newborn sessions for sure! …everything was just perfection!
Marisa Cox - OK, I SWEAR this is not just my pregnant hormones talking, but this is BY FAR the most incredible session I’ve ever seen of yours, and I almost cried at every single picture- they are AMAZZZZZZIIIIINNNGGG. The one of the little girl in the red dress with the baby is the most classic photo I’ve ever seen. Everything is incredible. I cannot say enough. I kind of want to have that Mom come over and tell us what furniture to buy for our house so our next newborn session will look as amazing. But is is mostly them, they are beautiful, and every moment was captured- sooooo amazing.
Susan Keller - oh my. Jennifer!!! you so beautifully captured the feeling of those precious, fleeting first days of adding a newborn little one to your family. these images make my heart smile …
Christine Pobke - So sweet and beautiful, Jen! :) As all of your images are. :) Love that 2nd to last one… very very lovely.
