Hello Baby :: Newborn Photography Emeryville, CA

This family has been long time clients, so when I got the email that they were expecting baby boy number two, I was excited for two reasons.  First, it was a newborn session (I love those!)  New life is so precious and sweet.  I always feel so honored to be a part of that fleeting moment.   And second, I knew the light in their loft.  It sounds so photo geeky, but it’s true.  Whenever I get a call or email about a newborn session, I immediately wonder about the light in their home.   The baby’s room had HUGE windows, so the light was beautiful.  You can really see it in the second picture down with his profile.  As it turns out, that picture is my favorite.  There’s just something about it that makes me stare – maybe it’s his little nose, or the way his tiny hand is curled around his ear… maybe it’s just his overall peacefulness.

Anyhow, this little peanut was too cute.  He was gorgeous in every way – super sweet and perfectly chunky – I seriously didn’t want to put him down!  He also slept more than I could have possibly hoped for.  He was still fast asleep once we moved outside!  Of course there is that little moment where he’s crying like mad… almost as if he knew his mama was giving attention to his older brother.   They do know, don’t they?  Kind of like when you’re on the phone and the quietly playing children suddenly decide it’s time to start WWIII.    This, my friends, is why I don’t dare answer the phone when The Crazies are awake.  It’s for the greater good.

I hope everyone has a lovely Valentine’s day – I cannot believe spring is nearly here!

And don’t forget about my beginning photography class at the Nurture Center in Lafayette.  It’s in two weeks!

I LOVE this session.  Which means I must share it with the world… and share I will!  Loads and loads of photo fabulousness!

Meet Chuck.  Alright, his parents didn’t really name him Chuck (much to my chagrin!), but it’s my little nick-name for the peanut.  The last time we saw Chuck (or didn’t see him) was at his gorgeous family’s lifestyle maternity session a couple of months ago.  And now we can add another beautiful shoot to the list.  The weather was dreary, but it was so warm and loving inside… even when his older brother and sister argued over who could hold him and love on him.  So cute!  Probably one of the few times sibling arguments are okay, right?

There are a lot of pictures to “ooooh and aaaaah’ over, so please forgive me for the download time.  I couldn’t help myself.  I love pretty.

Thanks for looking, and, as always, your loving comments are always appreciated!

Beatiful little baby A was welcomed into the world days after this maternity session.  He joins his older brother and sister in a home that is filled with love and laughter… and lots of action!  With my busy schedule, the tiny window a newborn is really a newborn, and the busy mama’s schedule, we had to squeeze this session in amongst visiting gardeners and electricians.  Not to mention the daddy was packing up gear to take the older two on a weekend camping trip so the mama and baby A could get some rest (bless his heart!)  Needless to say there was A LOT goin’ on at that house!  I wouldn’t want it any other way – I am always entertained when I shoot there.  Always.

Now for a little geek-speak.  This normally bright house was a little dark because we were shooting close to noon, so I was on a pretty high ISO – 800-3200.  Indoors I usually do black and white, so if I get a little noise it doesn’t bother me.  I like to think of it as “digital grain”.  Since I put emotion before perfection, I can live with high ISOs.  But boy, when I hit a house that I shoot 200 ISO in, I am in HEAVEN!  Luckily it was really warm (er… hot) outside and we did the sleeping baby pictures out in the shade where I used my 85mm. Probably something I wouldn’t do again without an assistant.  You have to stand so far back that it makes for a lot of walking when you need make subtle changes.  Plus I shot at f/3.2 and I still got more blur than I was wanting – I wasn’t standing quite far enough away – probably subconscious because I didn’t want to walk so much in the heat!  I need to pop my 50mm 1.4 back on my camera for these sessions.  I switched to my 24-70mm last year, and decided to try something new this time since I love the 85mm so much.  And that concludes our geeky segment of this post.  I’ll try not to do that to you too often!

Have beautiful weekends!  I’m off to 10 mile lake in MN to shoot my cousins wedding this weekend!
